Nursing, aged care and tech top future jobs growth
With the release of ATAR’s in NSW and the ACT today [20 January], the National Skills Commission has identified the top 10 jobs that are projected to grow the most to 2025 in its report, The State of Australia’s Skills 2021: now and into the future.
At the top of the list, and in line with the trend for growth in the medical, care and services sectors, are ‘aged and disabled carers’ and ‘registered nurses’.
Demand for these two roles together is expected to grow by 40%. Aged and disabled carers jobs will grow by 54,700 in the next four years and registered nurses will grow by 46,500.
Reflecting our ongoing reliance on digital technologies, ‘software and applications programmers’ are expected to increase by 30%, or 46,100.
Waiters (42,000) and ‘café and restaurant managers’ (21,300) come in fourth and seventh place, consistent with the strong continuing demand in hospitality and an expected rebound after COVID 19 related impacts
‘General clerks’ take the middle spot, with the profession of ‘advertising, public relations and sales managers’ in sixth, solicitors in eighth place and ‘advertising and marketing’ in tenth place. Reflecting strong growth in some trades, Electricians are in ninth place.
Half of the top 10 are jobs that require a degree as a minimum, three require a certificate level II or III, one requires a diploma or advanced diploma and one requires a certificate level IV.
National Skills Commissioner, Adam Boyton, says “The level of skill required for these top 10 jobs reflects our analysis that the majority of growth will be in jobs requiring more study after school – whether that’s through a higher education pathway or VET qualification. It’s also important to note that the core skills that are needed for every job, such as teamwork, flexibility, showing initiative, being a problem-solver and being able to plan and organise are highly valued by employers, especially when workplaces are under pressure.”
